Why is it you simply cannot stumble upon any article about C++ inheritance without someone throwing in “in C++ your friends get to see your privates! *giggle* *snicker* *etc*”?

I thought this was funny when I heard it the first time — when I was in high school.  It’s just not funny anymore!
