I removed the ads from the front page. They were annoying me, and (unobtrusive as they were) I just don’t want them on the front page. There’s still an ad on the blog, but that one actually fits and should be easy to ignore (or just use adblock, if you don’t want to see the ad). It’s just a google ad anyway, which is mainly there so I can experiment with AdSense.
I left the Firefox referral ad on the front page for a few reasons:
- I actually *do* use, test, and develop this site on Firefox (1.5.0.5 at time of writing).
- The google toolbar (on windows) is pretty cool in and of itself. Highliting terms on pages has saved me more time than I’d like to think about…
- Firefox is a really neat browser because of things like adblock and the extension architecture
- 30 percent of my visitors use Firefox. I wanna see that number in the 80 percent range.
- It runs on linux! What more can anyone want!?
